Chilmark and Fonthill Bishop CofE Primary School

Oak Class

Oak class is a mixed Reception and Year 1 class. We are taught by Miss Murphy and our Teaching Assistant is Mrs Crowe. She supports us in class, in small group and individual interventions.

Oak has a spacious classroom with many resources to support learning. This caters for both the National Curriculum for the year 1s and the Early Learning Goals for the reception children. We run zones which include our continuous provision such as sand, water, mud kitchen, creative, building and malleable areas which are enhanced weekly. Children in both year 1 and reception are given opportunities to choose within these areas to build their skills.

The classroom is run through whole class and group activities and also through play-based opportunities. The children are taught Maths, Writing and Phonics and Reading daily. In addition to this, the children are taught foundation subjects, this incorporates the National Curriculum for the Year 1s and the Early Learning Goals for reception. To enrich our curriculum, we are lucky to have specialist teachers including Mr Kenich our PE teacher, Vivienne our art teacher and Wendy our dance teacher.

Building an understanding of the world around us is at the heart of what we do in Oak. We are building opportunities to get out into our local environment, alongside learning about the wider world, including places, people, their communities and religions. Our learning is enriched with various opportunities including trips and experiences in the school environment.

A great benefit of our smaller class size means that we get to know each child as an individual. Each is unique with their own interests. We encourage our children to build resilience and to take risks. We support them to build confidence and independence. They build relationships with children and adults across the school. We also have a representative from each year group on the school council.
